Legend of Korra Episode 2 Review

thetorinado:

Time for episode 2!

THE AIR ACOLYTES

When I first saw them, I was like “WOAH, ARE THOSE OTHER AIRBENDERS?!” I thought maybe Aang traveled the world and gathered up people who had Air Nomad blood. The LoK site on Nick.com says that they’re “Air Acolytes,” so I guess they’re non-benders or people from other nations who are studying the Air Nomad culture. I love this idea! It’s cool that Tenzin is not the only one who’s trying to uphold their traditions.

KORRA’S (FAILED) ATTEMPT AT AIRBENDING

She is SO ADORABLE. The scene with the swinging gates and the jazz music was hilarious. Poor Korra. She looks so awkwardly cute in the airbending outfit, too.

TENZIN AND HIS AIR BABIES

HOLY AWESOME AIRBENDING. When Tenzin did that move to get the gates moving, I was like “KJDKJFLSKJS. BADASS.” Jinora too! I can’t wait to see more airbending from these guys.

OWL SENTRIES

These guys are hilarious, but it makes me kind of sad that OWL turned into a group of buffons with only a few respectable members. I hope we get some kind of explanation as to why they are so different from when Iroh and company were in it.

TENZIN’S TEMPER

This man is quickly becoming my favorite character. He has so much of his mother’s sass. I love that when he gets short tempered, it comes out in little bits of airbending. Nice touch.

THE PROBENDING ARENA

IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. The scene where they panned across the water to the arena was so intense! And when Korra jumps into the water to get there? Awesome.

TOZA

Oh Toza. You’re so grumpy and I love you already. I noticed something interesting, that after he was done sassing Korra and Bolin, he used bending to pick up a dumbbell. I first thought, “Wah? He’s an earthbender/metalbender?” But then I thought that maybe there was water into the dumbbell, and it was a sort of stamina training for waterbenders.

BOLIN

BOOOOOOOOOOOLIN. YOU’RE PERFECT. Oh man. He spots Korra, smoothes back his hair, struts over, and then makes a dork of himself. He’s going to be a great character. He’s got so much personality already! I loved the part when he “assumes” that Korra is Water Tribe because of how she looks and then he’s like “Whoops, didn’t mean to be racist…” I can’t wait to see him in more action.

MAKO

I was actually really impressed with Mako’s characterization. I thought he was going to be a little too mellow and bland (compared to Korra and Bolin). I was skeptical at first but the line, “You’re the Avatar, and I’m a idiot.” won me over. He’s the perfect combination of nonchalance and sassiness. Plus he’s got some serious firebending skills. I look forward to see both his overprotective brotherly side and his dorky socially awkward side.

PROBENDING

The action was awesome! Except for Hasook. (Damnit Hasook, this is why we can’t have nice things.) I loved when Korra was showing off and didn’t know what she was doing. She just whipped the other guy off the side and the other team was like “WAIT. WHAT.”  Then when she got her act together and used her airbending training to help win, it was magical. I can’t wait to see more of how her probending and airbending influence each other.

TENZIN AND KORRA

These two are so cute. I love the teacher/student and fatherly/daughterly moments between them. I look forward to the development of their relationship, especially how the Equalist movement and probending affect it.

THE ENDING SCENE

I know Makorra fans are bouncing off the wall from this, and while I am trying to remain unbiased about shipping, I definitely seem some implications. However, I don’t think that was solely what this scene was for. I pictured Mako thinking something like, “The Avatar’s joined our probending team. What does this mean for me and Bolin? Is she going to come through for us? Everything is going to be so different now.” And Korra thinking something like, “Probending is awesome. I can’t believe I’m on a team! And I’m friends with people my own age who are benders! Man, this city is awesome.”

OVERALL THOUGHTS

This episode was very well done and they definitely slowed the pace down from the first one. I love the way they introduced the brothers.

FUTURE SPECULATION

I think that Hasook didn’t show up just to be an ass, but because he was captured by Equalists. I feel like if he really wanted to screw over the Fire Ferrets, he would have said something to them, or the brothers would have heard somewhere that he was planning on quitting. The fact that they heard NOTHING is a bit suspicious. If he was captured by the Equalists, it would be interesting to hear something about it in the show.
